Herman Caicedo, trainer of
heavyweight Luis Ortiz 21-0-0 (18 KOs), said the Cuban southpaw arrived in
great shape for training camp as they prepare for their September 11 clash with
Lateef Kayode. The heavyweights will slug it out at Hard Rock Hotel & Casino
in Las Vegas, with the WBA interim heavyweight world title at stake.
BoxingScene.com (Reynaldo
Sanchez) spoke with Caicedo about the upcoming title fight.
Boxing fans are wondering if
Ortiz will be in good shape for this fight against Kayode. What can you say to
that?
Herman Caicedo: Ortiz is conducting a full training camp,
from their diet, as regular medical checkups to ensure that his body is a
well-oiled machine and ready to face what Kayode present that night. They carry
on a large number of rounds with different opponents and exercises in the gym,
are to improve his resistance.
According to you, can we rule
out comparisons with other like Odlanier Solis and Mike Perez?
HC: I know my fighter, I know
the work we do together and I understand that Luis Ortiz will be in top
physical condition on September 11th. I cannot comment on Perez or Solis, I
guess they did a great job during their workouts, but not enough.
Kayode said recently that he
will knock Ortiz out. How do you feel about those comments?
HC: Everyone carries a plan
for every fight; we know it will be a tough fight for them and for us. About
knocking out Ortiz; no, I don’t think so. Ortiz has faced tougher fighters than
Kayode and he has defeated them all. That leads me to believe Kayode can’t back
up his words. In boxing, a single punch could change a fight. I’m not claiming
that Ortiz will knock Kayode out. All that I can say now is that Ortiz will
arrive fight-ready to face the best Kayode and I think the best Ortiz will
always beat the best Kayode.
Is any of that to antagonize
his coach, Freddie Roach?
HC: We respect all coaches; I
know Roach's successful career and fame. However, that's not something I worry
about. We are putting in the work to defeat Kayode. Roach can’t prevent Luis
Ortiz from beating Lateef Kayode on September 11th.
